While I have only high school German and my suggestion may be without merit, I have a feeling that this is an example of being led astray by consonant-vowel sandhi when two words collide. A long time ago, English used to say "a norange" about the fruit from Spain (naranja), which in modern English is transformed to "an orange."

I believe that some of the word liaison for which French is famous goes on in German as well, so there may be people pronouncing "hier unter" as "hie-runter". However, English has a word "hereunder" and German has "hierunter", so perhaps this can be solved just by deleting one "r," closing up the words and making it: "Wie bist du hieruntergelangt?"

Interesting, but I think the word boundaries are such that we need the "r" both in "runter" and in "hier". So we can't drop one (at least not according to modern orthography rules).
"runter" is a bit colloqual, it is short for "herunter". ("her-" indicates direction, classically towards the speaker). So the sentence could as well be: Wie bist du hier heruntergelangt?
