I think "set the universe into motion" refers to something that occured in the past.
maybe "puso en movimento el universo" ?

Corregido. Set es igual en presente y en pasado y depende como se entienda la descripción, bien desde el momento de la explosión hasta hoy o bien desde el momento presente hablando entonces sobre un suceso pasado. Yo la sigo entendiendo como una descripción presente de ese momento perdido en el tiempo pero no tengo ningún inconveniente en mejorarla.

La frase inglés es un poco como si el unvierso ya habría existido antes del big bang y este solo lo puso en movimiento.

Como puedes ver no he tenido inconveniente alguno en realizar el cambio al pasado. Creo en una actitud positiva y que los cambios, siempre para mejorar, bienvenidos sean.
