Tu comentario es acertado pero puedo tratarse de que uno recuerde algo que le pregunten sobre una 2ª o 3ª persona de ahi que no haya usado la particula "lo" o "la" o "ello". Por ejemplo: No recuerdo (a Luis) regando el jardín ayer cuando estuve de visita. Creo que puede ser mejorada. Escucharé nuevas sugerencias.

Si estamos hablando de la frase inglesa, para los hablantes nativos suena que se trata de sí mismo. Por eso no creo que queden otras opciones. Acabo de preguntar a una persona americana y la respuesta es:
I don't remember doing that.
It means that I don't remember doing something that I may have done, or that you think I've done.
