Interessehalber möchte ich fragen, ob der japanische Satz auch "als das passierte" bedeuten könnte (wie der französische Satz)

Nein, im japanischen Satz heißt es auch „durch Zufall“ oder „gerade zu dem Zeitpunkt“.

Eine ganze Menge dieser japanischen Sätze sind sehr gestelzt ins Englische übertragen worden. Andererseits gibt es auch zahllose ganz furchtbare japanische Sätze, bei denen versucht wurde, grammatische Elemente wie Artikel oder Pronomina irgendwie abzubilden, die es im Japanischen eigentlich nicht in vergleichbarer Form gibt.
