can someone explain the function of "again" in this sentence ?

http://oald8.oxfordlearnersdict...tionary/half_3
quote "
half as many, much, etc. again (British English) (US half again as much)
an increase of 50% of the existing number or amount"

I think it has to be "half as much again as" (meaning "1.5 times as much as"), in German "anderthalbmal so viel wie".

Merci sysko ! I had bizarrely never read or heard that form before. Must be somewhat archaic or in disuse...
