Needs native check (English)

Dejo Dejo September 27, 2010 September 27, 2010 at 1:18:17 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

The English grammar is good. The sentiment expressed is questionable LOL I like to quote a friend of mine who said: "I'm only an immigrant trying to protect the English language from its native speakers." :)

> The sentiment expressed is questionable
That’s why I’ve tagged it “Controversial” ^^''
So that people will be able to filter such sentences if they think they’re offensive.

> "I'm only an immigrant trying to protect the English
> language from its native speakers." :)
^______^
I like it. ^^

> Demetrius declares the New World Order!
Ah, you're too late, I’ve already declared it in IRC long ago. ;)
Ask Saeb, he was there back then.

The first sentence is inhuman and inacceptable on this site and among us. The second one an important message, besides controversial enough in itself. That's why my urgent proposal is to delete the first sentence.

This sentence was targeted at me as I was defending the French language against non natives trying to alter it according to their fantasy (Scott pretended to be a native French speaker, when he is a native English Canadian speaker. by the way, FeuDRenais, here, pretends to be a native speaker of English but he is actually a native speaker of russian. He also used several profiles on Tatoeba...so not only our young users do have murderous pulsions, but they can also be quite pervert.)
As you can see, al_ex_an_der, the atmosphere is not always quiet, on Tatoeba...

Having read the very personal statement of sacredceltic with respect and not without regret,
I would like to turn your attention to the fact that there is even more in question.

Which purpose and future this project and our until now so diligent cooperation in it may have, and will both make sense at all, if we have here an instigation to murder as an example sentence?!

I add that I don’t want to jugde or even condemn the addition of the phrase in question by its author. I suppose that at this time he didn’t realize wholly the significance.

in esperanto:

Kian celon kaj estontecon povas havi, ĉu entute sencon povas havi tiu projekto kaj nia ĝis nun tiom diligenta kunlaboro por ĝi, se ni havas ĉi tie murdalvokon kiel ekzemplan frazon?

Mi aldonas, ke mi tute ne sentas emon prijuĝi aŭ eĉ kondamni la enmeton de tiu frazo fare de ĝia aŭtoro. Mi supozas, ke tiutempe li ne plene ekkonsciis la signifon.

al_ex_an_der, the sentence shouldn't be read literally. If you search the internet for "must die", you will find a lot of examples of such a phrase. It is not a death threat but just a metaphorical way to show disapproval.

I don't want to start a long discussion here, but I do believe this sentence belongs here.

I agree with Demetrius. "must die" is an example of:

hyperbole
■ noun deliberate exaggeration, not meant to be taken literally.
@alexander, I suggest you change the German translation to "Puristen dürfen nicht toleriert werden."

>hyperbole

Oh! So you mean that everybody was mistaken when they started to exterminate Jews by the million because Hitler had just been "hyperbolic"?
Interesting view...this way, any call for murder can be forgiven...at least in English...and why that linguistic privilege?
