The english version is a past and the french one is a present.

This verb is indeed written the same way in its "présent" and its "passé simple" form, with "il, elle, on". It's the same for all "second group" verbs in french, those verbs finishing with -ir, and for all those "third group" verbs finishin with -ire (such as "sourire"). So short sentences without context aren't always clear. With a more detailed context or in oral conversations, you could chose "Mike a souri", using "passé composé" rather than "passé simple".
