Ich wäre mir da nicht so sicher. Hieße das hier ausgeschrieben nicht vielleicht „auf dem Weg zur Arbeit und von der Arbeit“?

"Zu der Arbeit" ist unüblich, mein Verständnis ist so wie von Espi beschrieben.

zur = zu der
aufgelöst: 'auf dem Weg zu der und von der Arbeit', was in meinen Ohren ein wenig holprig klingen würde.
Die Formulierung 'auf dem Wege zur Arbeit` ist selbstverständlich richtig und allgemein üblich. :)
