*What happened to *the acid rain

Acid rain has to be defined since the second part of your sentence refers to it. I think you'd rather use a plural form here, unless your sentence focuses on one particular acid rain, in which case the French translation is wrong.

I don't agree. Including "the" just doesn't sound right. I wish I could cite a grammar rule but I can't. Maybe we could use another opinion here.

@qdii: In English, "acid rain" usually refers to the phenomenon and not to individual occurrences of it. You wouldn't say "the" for the same reason that you wouldn't say "the general relativity".
