the* internet

Also, using "acquaint" here is unusual, but if you're going to use it, then it sounds better to say "acquaint ourselves".

Maybe "acquaint" sounds more British?

What would you use instead?

"acquaint" is common here, but only in the sense of being acquainted with people. I'm not sure if its other uses are more common in British English.

I think I would say "see", "understand", or "familiarize ourselves", but I see no problem with "acquaint", as long as it's followed by "ourselves". You really can't leave off the object.

Also, "the mental activities" is a bit more natural.

>but only in the sense of being acquainted with people

That is the very sense here...

>I think I would say "see", "understand", or "familiarize ourselves"

I'm unconvinced...to me, "familiarize" sounds like a bad french translation..."acquaint" somehow sounds to me more naturally English.

Thank you for your contribution anyway !

For the record, what I think is most interesting here, is that I translated this sentence from Esperanto, written by an Iranian...

No, this is with the ideas of people, not the people themselves.

> I'm unconvinced...to me, "familiarize" sounds like a bad french translation..."acquaint" somehow sounds to me more naturally English.

Interesting. To me, "acquaint" sound more like something a francophone would say, and "familiarize" sound more like regular English.

>No, this is with the ideas of people, not the people themselves.

You're playing on words...What is getting acquainted with people if not with their mental activities? Fuck them?
