It depends on the meaning. This is fine if he is tired in general, not just right before he went to bed. English tends to use tenses more freely than the Romance languages, so I assume that if this is correct in Portuguese then it must be okay in English. :-)

The Portuguese sentence is a little wrong too, one can say, in the same way @Shiawase mentioned. But it's natural, in my (biased?) opinion. I'm changing the English one to "was tired".
