hola ¿esta frase viene de alguna parte, sean libros o películas? no entiendo bien el principio de la frase (les diversités de statut personnel) y no me parece muy claro así. ¿a lo mejor se trata de clases sociales?

La frase se refiere a que las sociedades democráticas, que han abolido las diferencias de estatus que tienen fuerza legal, necesitan (como todas las demás sociedades) un mecanismo de distinción entre la gente, en este caso el dinero.

@hundo, creo que lo en que me equivoqué era que en francés también nos referimos a -statuts personnels- y -statut personnel- como términos legales que tienen otros sentidos, acaso es lo mismo en español. Pero vale gracias por la explicación.
