** Tatoeba Day #2 **
Tatoeba Day starts *now* and will end in more or less 30 hours.
If you are new to this event, you can find more information about it in the following threads:
- https://tatoeba.org/eng/wall/sh...#message_22652
- https://tatoeba.org/eng/wall/sh...#message_23097
In short, the goal of the event is to improve Tatoeba. You can participate by:
1) Reporting bugs or suggesting improvements for the website.
2) Testing the dev website (https://dev.tatoeba.org).
3) Writing or improving our documentation in the wiki (http://en.wiki.tatoeba.org/).
4) Coding (https://github.com/Tatoeba/tatoeba2).
For today's event, there is a special rule: if you are going to report bugs or suggest improvements (I will call these "requests"), I will ask that you limit yourself to 2 requests. Only request the 2 most important things that you would like to see implemented or fixed today.
Note that I will consider upvotes as a request. In other words, if someone suggests something, and you say "+1" to it, this is 1 request from you.
If possible, take some time to browse our GitHub issues before writing your requests.
https://github.com/Tatoeba/tatoeba2/issues
If you find out that your request is already listed as a GitHub issue, then simply mention the link to the GitHub issue in your message.
That's it!
You can now start replying to this thread to make your requests.

It's going to be difficult to implement this for Tatoeba because we have several issues related to this feature.
The first problem is that it can be very, very slow to filter sentences by "not translated into". For instance if you search all sentences in English not translated into French.
Then there is another problem with the filters, which is user experience problem:
https://github.com/Tatoeba/tatoeba2/issues/627
Then the last problem is that we need to review the way this feature is coded, so that we can make it generic and easy to apply to other places than the "Browse by language" page.
I'm currently looking into a solution to optimize the response time when people filter by "not translated into".
One way to solve the slowness problem is to exclusively rely on Sphinx to sort out sentences. My recent progresses in that field make be believe it’s a workable solution.
I made a pull request to make the "not translated into" queries much faster, but with the cost that the results won't be accurate if some fields are not properly sync'ed.
https://github.com/Tatoeba/tatoeba2/pull/690
I think as well it could work out to rely only on Sphinx to filter and sort sentences but this pull request can be a solution until we (you) have time to experiment enough with Sphinx.
Let users select the number of sentences per page (in the settings page, from 10, 20, 50 and 100 perhaps) and apply it to all the pages where currently only 10 sentences are displayed (i.e. 6 types of pages named by CK on https://tatoeba.org/wall/show_m...essage_23124).
I’m working on it (ticket: https://github.com/Tatoeba/tatoeba2/issues/30).
Go to https://dev.tatoeba.org/user/settings and try changing the new “Number of sentences per page” setting.
Great! I hope this won't overload the server.
I think it would be useful to implement this: https://github.com/Tatoeba/tatoeba2/issues/337
I guess many users (me included) search for many words/expressions, and it's very long and wasteful to delete them manually, so having a button to clear the search query in an automated way would save a great amount of time to users
Do you think this button should reset the “from” and “to” lists to “Any” as well?
yes, it might be a good idea
How about that? http://dev.tatoeba.org/
maybe it could also have the possibility of deleting the search history, along with clearing the search field, and this could be optional, that is to say, the user may choose if he wants only to clear the search field or also deleting all the search history at once
What do you mean by “search history”? If you mean the previously submitted queries, this is a browser-specific thing I don’t think we can mess with in any way.
Yes, I meant the previously submitted queries
My request:
What I would like is being able to permanently delete all the PMs that are in my trash can.
I have created an issue in GitHub: https://github.com/Tatoeba/tatoeba2/issues/687
I'll be working on it in a couple of hours.
Great! Thanks.
You can test this on the dev website (http://dev.tatoeba.org).
There is a link "delete forever" for messages that are in the Trash folder.
By the way, @English native speakers, is the wording "delete forever" okay? Or should this be worded differently?
second request
I guess it would be useful to finally fix this issue: https://github.com/Tatoeba/tatoeba2/issues/152
This affects logs of sentences, the activity timeline, older wall posts, and birthday and registration date in the user profile.
This should be the last issue to tackle in order to have a fully translated interface (without any element in English, even if you choose any other language), which could be a nice improvement for users (maybe especially the new ones), so they can see that everything is in their own language, or, if the string isn't translated yet on Transifex, they can translate everything in their own language to have a fully localized interface
Representing timestamps in a language-independent but rather mechanical format (for example, "2004-02-12T15:19:21+00:00", or some simpler variation such as "2004-02-12 15:19") would be pretty straightforward. Doing it in a language-specific, localizable way would not. Would people be more satisfied with a format like "2004-02-12 15:19" than what they have now? Personally, I would. Note that currently, suffixes are added to days of the month (February 12th, 2004), which is not what is usually done in the U.S. This shows that conventions vary even within the same Tatoeba interface language (English).
maybe the format you're suggesting would be better for every language
or perhaps
2004-02-12T15:19:21Z
https://en.wikipedia.org/?title=ISO_8601#UTC
I understand that the Z makes the time less ambiguous, but I think I'm going to leave it out anyway, together with the T, unless there are objections. I find that the presence of those letters makes the timestamp significantly harder to read.
[not needed anymore- removed by CK]
My change is checked in and visible from http://dev.tatoeba.org/ . I did go with the "2004-02-12 15:19" format.
I think that 2004-02-12 15:19
is local time.
If no UTC relation information is given with a time representation, the time is assumed to be in local time:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/?tit...ne_designators
Technically, yes. But I think that users of the site would be more confused by the presence of the Z (which would be unfamiliar to most of them) than they would by its absence. Since I doubt anyone uses message timestamps to help them decide when to catch a plane, I think the lack of a Z is fine.
+1, I guess letters can be confusing for most users. Maybe we can specify somewhere (maybe in the wiki) which timezone is represented by the time and the date
Yes, the wiki probably would be a good place. I'll think about where in the wiki would be suitable.
[not needed anymore- removed by CK]
Yes, and I think it’s probably good enough. All recent dates are reported in a “x ago” form, while only the more older ones (older than 30 days) are displayed as a date, in which case the precise hour and minutes are likely to be unimportant.
Is it possible to implement the "not directly translated into" while we browse sentences by tag?

This is part of CK's request.
Cf. my response about this: https://tatoeba.org/eng/wall/sh...#message_23142
** Add an option "send message to user(s) that
-Are ACs
-Are CMs
-Are Admins
- native language is
- you are used to send message to
- your 'co-workers" (in this case, there would be a "+1" that would 'add' thid person in a contact list and so,.easily talk to him/her" ***
I personally prefer not allow users to send mass messages, because spammers can easily abuse it.
The only group of people for which it makes sense to have a "send to all" feature is perhaps the admins. But for this, you can write an email to community-admins@tatoeba.org.
The idea of a contact list could make sense, but we are not really prioritizing social features at the moment.
## add more options to browse sentences in order to translate/link them
- sentences in ***that have the word '***' that were not translated/were translated into/have no tag/
This request is more or less part of: https://github.com/Tatoeba/tatoeba2/issues/53
It would have been too long to implement for Tatoeba Day.
On a side note, the rule was to post only 2 requests, and this is your 3rd one.
Tatoeba Day is now over.
You can see the summary of what is going to be included in Tatoeba's update:
https://github.com/Tatoeba/tato...nes/2015-06-22
(Make sure to check both the "Open" and "Closed" issues)
Contrary to last time, the update will not be done right now, but on Monday. This gives us more time to test and make sure that nothing has broken.
If you have time, please, test everything that you can on the dev website (https://dev.tatoeba.org).
Thank you!
i tested https://github.com/Tatoeba/tatoeba2/issues/337 and it works fine. Maybe it could also reset the language to "any" (if a specific language has been chosen), but, apart from this it works fine
> Maybe it could also reset the language to "any"
I'm not sure if that would be a good idea. There's little change you'll want to search in a new language whenever you search for new sentences.
Maybe clicking on the cross when the search field is empty could reset the languages to "any".
> Maybe clicking on the cross when the search field is empty could reset the languages to "any".
That could be fine
the new date format (https://github.com/Tatoeba/tatoeba2/issues/152) doesn't cover the activity timeline: https://dev.tatoeba.org/ita/con...meline/2015/06
I've fixed that.
This delay will also allow us to translate the interface. I updated the resource on Transifex, there are a few new strings to translate.
Tatoeba has been updated.
https://github.com/Tatoeba/tato...22+is%3Aclosed
Now that it's been updated, how do I choose the number of sentences displayed per page? I don't see any button for that, or any parameter in the URL.
It's an option in your settings: https://tatoeba.org/eng/user/settings
Excellent. Thank you.
