I think either one is ok, but maybe "waking up" is slightly preferred to "just "waking".

I'd say "falling into sleep". "Going to sleep" isn't quite the same, is it?

Going to sleep, falling into sleep, drifting into sleep etc. appear to be fairly synonymous. "Going to sleep" is clearly by far the stylistically neutral locution, though.
(I do love to use the word 'locution' now that I know it. Hope I'm not misusing it too much xD)
