Ich finde, "vorher" steht hier zu weit hinten im Satz.
(Allenfalls würde ich das anders auffassen: er hat vielleicht schon oft mit einem Mädchen getanzt, aber noch nie vorher. Aber wovor?)

Ich wuerde das hier bevorzugen: "Tom hatte vorher noch nie .. "
Ist mein "hat" nur umgangssprachlich, aber grammatikalisch falsch? Also, muss es "hatte" heiszen?

Wahrscheinlich ist "hat" als Übersetzung nicht definitiv falsch, aber das englische past perfect entspricht i.d.R. der deutschen Vorvergangenheit:
Past Perfect Tense indicates that an action was completed (finished or "perfected") at some point in the past before something else happened.

Ich stelle mir vor, dass die ganze Geschichte in der Vergangenheit spielt:
Tom war sehr nervös. Er hatte vorher noch nie...
