[epo]

[eng]

I see that often, sentences that are correct, are being changed, although the translators who CORRECTLY translated them are not even informed of these changes.
Subsequently, Corpus maintainers unlink these "erroneous" translations that were perfectly correct before these rogue changes.
I completely disapprove of such actions, because :
1) this destroys the work of good translators (who are then even considered as lousy ones, because of these changes !!!)
2) The saboteurs are not even aware of their crimes and can continue their rogue changes even without any feeling of guilt...
3) The unlinked translations are retranslated, often badly...so the corrections and comments on the former translations must be done again, as they don't mean anything anymore since the links they relate to have been destroyed !

Greetings! I just heard about Tatoeba on memrise, and think it is an awesome project. I live in South Africa. My mother tongue is English, but I speak Afrikaans, Turkish and a little Xhosa and French. I have just started with Mandarin which is how I got to memrise and then here. Having sample sentences is such a useful aid in learning. Thanks to those upon whose shoulders we now stand...

After being a Tatoeba user for 1,5 year I still think that the project is awesome and greatly perspective.

However: looking forward to see updates concerning the T's policies and plans.

0."What's new" section cries for revival!!!

A few lesser concerns:

1. Members rating being out of order for too long;
2. In the Chinese interface the list of languages is too disorderly (I would volunteer to draft a new order, if needed)
3. The chaos in tags is probably well known. My personal petty grudge is about the @archaic and archaic being two different things?! Probably, amendable by an admin's interference, or, still better, a redirect?

Surely, there are plenty of issues for the T-team to handle, but it would be great just to know which of them are being handled first, which are postponed, and which are beyond the reach in the nearest future. In a nutshell, WHAT'S NEW???

Yes, furigana is generated automatically using a program Mecab. Some problems can be fixed by tweaking mecab data, some are due to bad integration (i.e. mecab can convert numbers into furigana correctly, but this function doesn't work in Tatoeba).

Is it possible to indicate a date on which a language came into life? "What a question!" you will be inclined to say. And yet such a date exists: the 26th of July, the Day of Esperanto. On this day in 1887 appeared in Warsaw a booklet of Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof about the "International Language". Its size was modest, its motto ambitious: "For a language to be an international one, is not enough to call it as such." The name of the author was given as "Dr. Esperanto". After a few years in place of "The international language of Dr. Esperanto" the short name "Esperanto" came into use. Therefore on this day we celebrate all over the world the 125th anniversary of Esperanto.

But what does all this have to do with Tatoeba? Contributors from many countries, languages and cultures speak the language Esperanto in addition to their mother tongue and one or more other languages.
It has become evident that this is a very favorable factor for our project, which aims precisely at creating a network of translations in as many languages as possible in joint work.
One hundred and twenty five years have shown: Esperanto is much more than just a language.

26-th of July 1887 - 2012

ESPERANTO — MORE THAN A LANGUAGE

26 de julho 1887 - 2012
— — — 125 anos — — —

26. Juli 1887 - 2012
— — — 125 Jahre — — —

— — — 125 jaroj — — —
ESPERANTO — PLI OL LINGVO

Ĉu eblas indiki daton, je kiu ekvivis lingvo? "Kia demando!" oni emas diri.

« Quelle question ! » a-t-on tendance à dire.

I would like to be able to perform a search with two criteria: 1) a given source language and 2) a missing translation. For instance, list 15 French sentences for which the English translation is missing. Does this capability current exist? If not, could it be added to a desired feature list? Thanks!

Quite possible, I believe. The only problem is that you will see the whole list of French sentences not translated to English. I mean they will be displayed in pages of 10 and you cannot change the number of sentences in each page. But I don't think this will be a problem.

You could use my userscript [Tatoeba page navigator][1], which changes the current page to an input field, where you can either type a number or use the arrow keys to navigate to the previous or next page.

Great, thanks! Do you have a link explaining how to use it?

If you use firefox, just install the greasemonkey addon, then click the install button on the page i linked to. Usage itself is intuitive: just click the number of the current page ( in between the "<<", "<", ">", ">>" on top or bottom of a page), then type the number if the page or use the arrow keys to add or subtract one. Hit enter key to submit.

For other beowsers i will explain if you ask.

You're great! Thanks! Waiting for the infinite scrolling. :-)

There's now basic infinite scrolling in my script, however it still breaks all javascript that's supposed to be there.

Yes, I've just tried it, and it's looks great! It's a pity that we can't translate them. Do you think it would be easier to create a script to automatically open the translation box?

Basically, we wouldn't need to change the current page to translate more than 10 sentences. The following page would load automatically when you get to the end of the page, and we would just need to scroll down. That would make our work much easier... there's another script I asked jakov to do, which consists in opening the translate box automatically so that we don't need to click "translate" in every sentence...

If one of these come to life, nobody will stop us! If they are combined together...

Let's cross our fingers! Go, jakov! :-)

Sounds great. I wish jakov good luck with that then ;)

It's not going to be easy ;) as each sentence needs some javascript (for the translation button etc), but i'm going to try anyways.
