Back when I was much younger and first learning Japanese I was taught not to say たくさん when referring to people. We already have 122325 which says "日本語を話せるアメリカ人が大勢いる". Do we need this as well? Should they be merged?

「たくさん」は人にも使えると思いますよ。もしかしたら「いっぱいの人」が(前に何もつかないと)不自然だというのと勘違いされているのかもしれません。

ただこの文、特に文脈がなければ――つまりアメリカ人の日本語話者が数十万人いるという意味であれば――「が」より「は」の方がいい気がします。「僕の知り合いには」とか限定がついたら「が」にするべきなのですが。

Thanks for the clarification. If I see my old (now very old) teacher I'll growl at her.

(Looking around I see examples such as "交番の周りに人がたくさんいた I saw a large number of people around the police box.")
