Optional is OK, but why would you choose not to add it if it sheds more light on the sentence, making it clear to the reader that it's yet another statement by the same British scholar?

Does it seem more elegant, grammatically, not to add a comma here?

Ich meine, diese beiden gleichrangigen Nebensätze sind mit einem "und" aureichend verbunden. Wie arcticmonkey schon sagte, darf man ein Komma hinzufügen, wenn man möchte.

Actually, I have the same personal preference regarding commas as you do (in Hebrew, in English, and in any other language that I've been using for quite some time now). I thought that it was necessary here, but as you could rephrase the sentence moving the verb around, as you demonstrated, I can now understand why a comma is not really necessary here.

Beim Schreiben / Übersetzen (komplexerer Sätze) "kämpfe" ich zuerst und vor allem mit dem Inhalt. Da kann ich leicht Fehler oder Mängel übersehen. Deshalb ist Unterstützung immer willkommen.
