I would add a comma after "Tasmania". Even better, I would rephrase it: "In 1642, Abel Tasman became the first European to see Tasmania." As it stands, it sounds like he was merely the first European who saw Tasmania in that year; others might have seen it earlier.

When I read the initial sentence a second time, I realized that it had that meaning which is totally different from what I intended to say :-) Non-native speakers are like short-sighted people... they need to wear glasses [and in the case of translation, read again and ask help] in order to see right :-)
