John, would it be possible to leave out the word "er" in the second clause (in Hebrew such a stylistic feature is possible, but I'm not sure this is allowed in German):

Der Angestellte machte der Tochter des Direktors einen Heiratsantrag, aber wurde abgewiesen.

Having rethought about it, I'm not sure now whether it was him who was refused, or the proposition (der Antrag). So, could "er" be omitted? I believe not, but I would appreciate your explanation.
