"Well they say" features in none of the translations...

I don't know about the Japanese and wonder what went wrong here...

The Japanese says "(It's because) they say that bad news travels fast. I think the current English translation is good.

Well, then many other trAnslations are just wrong. I detach them.
Besides "news" is a collective, so it requires a plural verbal form.
The singular is "a piece of news"

You're right, indeed. My bad. I made a little research on English literature, and it seems the singular outpaced the plural from the mid 19th century onward.
Funnily, I have always stood corrected in my childhood, being told that the singular is "a piece of news". This is the reason of my wrong belief.
