La omisión del artículo indefinido ocurre en los casos siguientes:

Después del verbo ser cuando se habla de nacionalidad, profesión, oficio o religión no modificados.
Ejemplos: Mi padre es profesor.
Juan es alumno.
Pablo y su esposa son católicos.
María es española.

La explicación es muy simple, traducen de forma literal o creen que la gramática española es igual a la inglesa y no es así.

Me faltó darte más explicaciones sobre el uso de los artículos indefinidos:
Cuando el nombre está modificado, se usa el artículo.
Ejemplos:

Mi padre es un profesor exigente.
Juan es un alumno muy malo.
María es una española de 19 años.
