go to hospital > go to the hospital ?

If I am not mistaken, in Britain and Australia 'go to hospital' means to be taken there as a patient, whereas 'go to the hospital' is used when you go there for other reasons, such as visiting someone who is currently under hospital treatment, while Americans use 'go to the hospital' in either case.
