@Cangrejo I don't know Japanese but when I put the Japanese sentence through Google Translate it comes up with ''independent''. Maybe a Japanese speaker could confirm that.

With sentences imported from the Tanaka Corpus, this is not true. Either perhaps has the same possibility of being the original. Though, since the way the Tanaka Corpus was made, English could possibly have been the original sentence for a larger number of setences from that corpus,.
