This means that the plants and animals have to make do with a minimum of energy in the winter.

@al_ex_an_der
That's what the Esperanto sentences say. And my sentence is a translation from Serbian, that uses "keep", not "make".

@Selena007☺
The meaning is not much different, I would say.
(But we know something is always "lost in translation". ☺)

@al_ex_an_der
In Rissian it sounds rather strange... Like frozen water helps the animals ant plants to survive.

The original sentence is the Norwegian one. / La origina frazo estas la norvega.
It isn't easy to translate. / Ĝi ne estas facile tradukebla.
I'll try to say it in English: / Mi provos diri tion en la angla:

The frozen water keeps winter forest life on the lowest flame.
(The lowest possible (most energy saving) flame you can use when you are cooking with gas.)

I see. So, I wonder if the Serbian sentence sounds naturally or not...

@soweli_Elepanto
I don't understand exactly what "жизнь теплится" means for Russians, but I guess I can't quite agree. The lack of warmth is of course the reason behind, but it's not the central idea of this sentence. The facts are as we know:
low temperature ---> frozen water ---> transportation reduced or stopped ---> energy supply minimized ---> reduction of energy consume necessary
The low temperature is considered as known but not mentioned in the sentence (or only indirectly by mentioning winter and frozen water).
I'd say the need to cope with the reduced energy supply is the central point of the sentence.
