
According to the French original, present tense?

"Согнулся" here is a state:
он сгибается = он согнут (il est courbé) = он согнулся.
My previous sentence sounded a bit unnatural that's why I've changed it.

However, I can leave one of the translations in present tense. What do you think?

Using the present is hardly 'unnatural', but rather emphasizing. It's like the past simply says that he bent (and, we assume in absence of any words to the contrary, is bent now), while the present stresses that he's bending every second under the weight.
Hence, the past would be the default here and the present would be expressive.

Of course it can be used to denote the transition as well, as a default option.
