Is there an extra character in this sentence?

saeb saeb February 9, 2012 February 9, 2012 at 6:46:11 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

looks ok I think (at least to me)

Eldad Eldad February 9, 2012 February 9, 2012 at 7:37:04 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

The first word, hla, has an extra character after it. I believe the other day Samer said about it that it's probably a bug with the display (I found a similar problem with one of his sentences, so he simply deleted the extra character at the end of the word). Maybe it had to do with the extra alef of the tanwin fatha, I'm not sure at the moment.

by the way, تزوّجتني - is it in the meaning of future here, although the form is past?

saeb saeb February 9, 2012 February 9, 2012 at 7:57:48 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

the meaning is probably derived from هلّا as a grammatical particle not from the tense...but don't know much about that other than that it's أداة تحضيض

saeb saeb February 9, 2012 February 9, 2012 at 8:00:56 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

>that it's probably a bug with the display

not sure how it's displayed on your end, it looks fine on my browser (firefox 7)

Eldad Eldad February 9, 2012 February 9, 2012 at 8:03:54 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Thanks.
Do I read it correctly:
Hala tazawwajtini?

I can now see it's a form which I know in Arabic to refer to the future.

Yes, there is an extra alef after "hala". I'm using Firefox 7, the last update.

>Do I read it correctly:
>Hala tazawwajtini?

more like hallaa it's actually هل+لا (probably)

>Yes, there is an extra alef after "hala"

an extra aleph as in هلاا ?

Eldad Eldad February 9, 2012 February 9, 2012 at 8:16:32 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Yes, exactly, as in هلاا
Could you erase that?

saeb saeb February 9, 2012 February 9, 2012 at 8:17:36 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

that's the problem I can't see it, can you try doing that for me?

Eldad Eldad February 9, 2012 February 9, 2012 at 8:18:26 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Yes, it's more like halla(a), هل+لا, thanks for the correction :)

Eldad Eldad February 9, 2012 February 9, 2012 at 8:19:16 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Yes, I'll correct the extra character now, just check after me to make sure it looks the same as before.

saeb saeb February 9, 2012 February 9, 2012 at 8:22:11 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

oh damn so the shaddah is being displayed as an aleph?

Eldad Eldad February 9, 2012 February 9, 2012 at 8:22:12 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

I had to delete the shadda, as I couldn't change it otherwise (whenever I tried to delete the extra aleph, it became "hal", with a missing aleph...).

Eldad Eldad February 9, 2012 February 9, 2012 at 8:23:03 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Yes, probably that's what happens, the shaddah probably causes this bug...

saeb saeb February 9, 2012 February 9, 2012 at 8:23:06 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

that's one weird display bug

Eldad Eldad February 9, 2012 February 9, 2012 at 9:47:02 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

It is indeed! :)
So be it. At least now I know where's the culprit when there is an extra aleph in one of the Arabic sentences... ;)
