That's fine.
We can use "the" or no "the" in English, but other languages may not have that option. There is a slight nuance of difference in meaning with and without the "the".

Annotation:
This means that you could tell by the way Mary was speaking that she was desperate.

I'm talkin' about 'the' specifically, since apparently you can also drop it here and get a working sentence, just a slightest bit different. Not very important since context should cover it; still worth pointing out.
