I agree with you mookee. "The news made her happy" should be "when she heard the news, she wasn't happy.
There are two different English translation above. The first one doesn't match.

This is a typical problem with unadopted sentences: human600 wrote this comment 20 months ago but nobody took heed because nobody owns this - obviously valid - japanese sentence.
So mistakes that have been duly spotted remain in the database forever nonetheless because this Tanaka corpus pairs are venerated as sacred. This is ridiculous!
Please, someone, adopt these sentences and take charge, at last!
