I don't know which sentence was first but the german sentence doesn't match with the english one. "They eat dinner" means "Sie essen zu Abend". "Sie essen zu Mittag" would be "They have lunch" or something like that.

could anyone tell me if "dinner" can stand also for the german word "Mittagessen"?

Naja, laut LEO http://dict.leo.org/ende?lp=ende&search=dinner kann es auch Mittagessen bedeuten, aber normalerweise wird es wirklich für's Abendessen benutzt.
Bloß, ist man denn gegen 12 Uhr zu Abend? Das ist hier die Frage ... ;))

Also, laut dem chinesischen Satz ist hier ein Abendessen spät in der Nacht gemeint (so schrieb es Shishir, siehe #305402).

Wenn es spät in der Nacht ist, sollte es dann nicht auf Deutsch heißen 24 Uhr?
Übrigens das englische "Dinner" ist die Hauptmahlzeit des Tages, ganz gleich ob man mittags oder abends isst. In England ist 'dinner' meistens am Mittag, in den USA am Abend. In Kanada vermeiden wir das Wort. Hier gibt es: breakfast, lunch, supper.
