Kial ne sufiĉas "estis"? Oni ja ankaŭ ne diras "Ĝi pluvas" sed nur "pluvas", ĉu ne?
Mi certas, ke ĉiu komprenas la frazon.

Estis varmega tago = Ekzistis varmega tago = Il y avait un jour très chaud = Es gab...
Ĝi estis varmega tago = c'était un jour très chaud = es war...

La nuanco estas malgranda, sed ĝi estas nuanco

Temas pri du aliaj aferoj. En la frazo "Pluvas" ne ekzistas subjekto. Oni ne povas demandi "Kiu pluvas?" aŭ "Kio pluvas?".

Sed en tiu ĉi frazo ja ekzistas subjekto, nome "varmega tago".

Via frazo ne estas erara, sed havas alian signifon, germane "Es gab".

Komparu kun la komenĉiĝo de multaj fabeloj: "Estis iam bela princino ...".

@Manfredo, @PaulP: Miaopinie, jam la fonta angla frazo dependas de sia kunteksto. Angla "It was ..." ne ĉiam signifas "Ĝi estis ...". Jen du ekzemploj de kunteksto:

On July the 5th was Sunday. It was a very hot day. =La kvina de Julio estis dimanĉo. Ĝi estis tre varmega tago. (Temas pri tago).

I walked in the street yesterday. It was a very hot day. = Hieraŭ mi promenis surstrate. Estis tre varmega tago. (Temas pri mi).

Kion vi opinias pri tio?

Ĉu la dua frazo temas pri "mi"? Ne, temas pri "yesterday".
