The more accurate English representation, without context, in my opinion would be "What were you doing today?" as "今日何してた？" is shorthand for "今日何していた？" which is the past progressive tense.
Whereas "今日何しました？" would better reflect the translation "What did you do today?" as the polite past-tense form of the verb "する"—to do.

This sentence has a typo. It needs 今, as in "今日何しました？"
Also, "今日何してた？" sounds very natural to me. I would suggest undoing the change, back to "今日何してた？"
