Hi, please do not put alternative translations into Tatoeba. Decide for one sentence or add two sentences.

This is "I was listening to..." -- the other one's a better translation.

But as I said to the other, the é is old style and doesn't match the rest of the sentence.

Also, "ceòl" means "music", not "a song".

I'm sorry, but I think that such a sentence can also stand for "I listened". Have you checked that with a native speaker?

I was told categorically by native speakers when I started learning.

It doesn't feel complete to me at all -- I find myself wondering what happened.

Like "Bha mi ag eisteachd ri ceol an-de nuair a rainig am poileas" or something.

Actually, part of the problem here is the English sentence you're trying to translate -- it's slightly unnatural.

If you look at the German, it's "gehort" -- heard.
Translating that to English gives "I heard a really beautiful song yesterday", which translates into Gaelic better....
