
This sentence is not correct!

it would be nice to know what exactly is wrong about it.

The original sentence was "You are what you eat."
Because "you" can - in different contexts - be understood as more than one people, someone changed it in the sense of "they" in the following translations.
But this makes really no sense.

You confuse direct translations (green links) and indirect translations (grey links).
"You are what you eat." is not a direct translation of this sentence.
but is a translation of
"Sie sind, was Sie essen."
which in turn is a correct translation of this one...
It's normal that translations diverge from language to language as languages don't match word for word.
Tatoeba shows both direct and indirect translations so we are able to link indirect translations when they match, thus gaining energy in the translation process...

The question is not whether each individual would use a sentence to make it valid. The question is whether someone would.
