I think some of the links to this sentence should be checked, or at least alternate translations should be added. "He is a good writer" could mean that the person in question is a professional writer who writes well, but more generally, it can just mean that they are good at writing (even if it is not their profession). In fact, in everyday English, the latter construction is much more common, at least in my experience.
I can't know for sure because I'm only a native speaker of English, but I suspect many of the translations can ONLY mean that the person in question is a writer by profession.
For example I suspect the German #361488 would primarily mean that the person is a writer. I have just linked #10017338, since I think it's more often the correct translation. Same goes for the Russian #2110550 (for which I have just linked #8652603).
These translations should be OK, if the translations cover one meaning of the sentence.
That's why we allow alternative translations.
