Looking at the previous discussion, maybe there should be a mode allowing people to validate indirect translations, for example show me all the indirect translations between Japanese and French, and I'll validate and link them if they are correct.
If you ask sysko you may become an advanced contributor and do what you just have described.
Oh ok, I didn't know it was already implemented ! It would be cool if normal users could do it, I mean not all advanced contributors can check a Korea to polish translation, etc ...
you can always request a link in the comments. the idea of not letting beginner users link sentences is that changes in links are not easy to undo and that many new users need some time to understand the concept of the graph with its direct and indirect translations.
and everyone can pretty easily get advanced contributor ;)

In Russian, the phrase "иметь друзей" (to have friends) can be interpreted as "to fuck friends" as well. Though, one should be really prurient to do so. The word "иметь" (to have, to possess) is widely used as an euphemism for "fuck".
I mean one should translate sentences figuratively only when there is a good reason for that (i.e. context). Otherwise we would come with the every other sentence treated pervertly.
I don't know any good reason for NOT translating.

Why? It's a normal sentence. Tatoeba doesn't censor sentences unless they break French laws.
It's weird because most of the sentences are clearly pointing
to the meaning of making friends, and despite the good
intention, I feel that the translation is extremely
out of context. By this argument, I can right now go
to half tatoeba sentences and add new translations based
on the fact that lots of verbs could have tens of
meanings, regardless of the context of that main sentence
or the general consensus of other language translations.

you can't judge a sentence by other translations in other languages. Here, we're dealing with only one direct translation from French to English, and as far as I am concerned, the other translations in other languages could speak about pink elephants and that would be indifferent to me.
Yes, the French sentence also talks of making friends, but French is not unequivocal, far from it. If you don't understand that a sentence might have several different meanings, I suggest you should stop translating altogether, because you don't understand how languages work...
Why is it out of context ? This sentence has very little context. Who are you to decide what context should be supposed rather than any other ?
The principle of Tatoeba is that you are allowed as many translations of one sentence as you want, provided they are all correct sentences and are natural sentences in the target language. The other indirect translations should not be considered, and that is the very reason why they are hidden when you click on the translation button:
Indirect translations are irrelevant to a direct one.
This sentence is a perfectly accurate translation and perfectly natural sentence in French whether that pleases you or not.

There are two kinds of translations: direct and indirect. Indirect translations are trasnaltions of translations; they are generated automatically and may be inaccurate. Indirect translations are shown in GRAY.
Only direct translations should be considered.
When you add a translation, all the other sentences disappear and only one is left. This is not a coincidence: you add a translation ONLY TO ONE SENTENCE (in fact, this is written in red letters when you click on the "add translation" button, but still no one reads it... -_-")
In this case, you've added German translation as a translation of ENGLISH sentence, so it's a mistake. You should have clicked on the French sentence and added a translation to the French sentence.
and French law will probably be the last one to censor texts about sex, once all the puritans will dominate the whole planet...
By the way, a filtering system is planned. In the future, people will be able to hide such sentences if they want so... But it's not ready yet.

I completely agree, specially in the case of a moderator or advanced user, someone who has earned the trust of the community. That's why I agree with Marcelo that he's not trustworthy, so he shouldn't be given special powers. Sorry corvard, it's nothing personal, it's just that I like this site and I want the best for it.

Actually sometimes ago we decided for transparency reason to make the promotion to the corpus maintainer grade a public process made here on the wall, so that other people can express their support or their reserve against a candidate.
personally, if possible, I'd request that his "Advanced Contributor" status be turned back to "Contributor",
since "advanced" is a status you'd normally give to trustworthy contributors.
My guess is Corvard is no more than 12 years old...
For now according to his behavior on the wall i back this request.

1) il n'est pas particulièrement doué en langues.
2) Il traduit dans des langues qu'il ne maîtrise pas
3) il est très agressif et m'a gravement insulté à de nombreuses reprises sans raison (mais il est vrai que arcticmonkey fait ça aussi...)
Et indiquer dans son profil qu'on est de l'Antarctique n'aide pas spécialement à établir une quelconque confiance...
Like you, corvard, I am an advanced contributor, and in my eyes there is a lot that can be done in this position. What I want to say by this is; it's good to know that you are ready to support the team of the corpus maintainers, but maybe there is no need to hurry. In a later moment of time you will probably have much more support, especially if in the mean time you continue to contribute so actively like you do now - thus becoming known by more people - and say a bit more about you motivation and the work you want to accomplish being an c.m. As far as I am concerned; today I still don't know you enough to recommend you, but I highly appreciate the work you are doing now by adding very many Russian sentences. In order to make Tatoeba really useful it is very important to increase the number of sentences in those languages which at the moment are not (yet) in "leading positions".

I would personally object to granting Corvard corpus maintainer rights.
He has been advanced contributor for just about a month and I think it is quite a short term to pick up on it.
Furthermore I believe that higher possibilities require higher responsibility -- сorpus maintainer should be very punctual and careful person, and no less important is to be attentive to people. As I see it, Corvard sometimes is quite abrupt in his actions and words.
I honestly believe that he have good intentions requesting for promoting, but this time I would vote to leave his status as it is. I hope he won't have hard feelings about me after that.
