A divergence between written and spoken English comes into play here. In written English, one would paraphrase in order to avoid beginning a sentence with a digit ("I was born in 1980"). In spoken English, this is not an issue, so one could translate closer to the original ("1980 is the year I was born").

Actually, we try to avoid starting a sentence with a number also in Hebrew.
