En este contexto, siempre diría "fallar", porque "suspender" me suena como que tuvieron que ser pospuestas

SUSPENDER es palabra polisémica, por lo que puede aparecer en diversos contextos y situaciones, no sólo en España. Aunque, como sucede con otros vocablos de la lengua, puede haber preferencias de uso según qué sitios.

En este caso, su significado implica DETENER o PARAR la aprobación del examen, generalmente con la idea de someterse a un nuevo examen en el futuro.
Algunos ejemplos de uso:
-Suspendí un examen. (No pasé el examen. / No superé el examen. / Fallé en el examen.)
-La reunión se suspendió. (La reunión se detuvo. / La reunión se anuló.)
-El camión quedó suspendido del puente. (El camión quedó colgando del puente.)
