I tend to translate the English preterit in either French passé simple or passé composé, because French imparfait implies a recurrence and a duration that only a progressive form in English would render, and that is not implied in a simple past.

Yes, I agree with you. However, I regarded the "regarder autour de moi" as an action of some duration, so I thought you would prefer to translate it using imparfait.
