dürfen? "may" expresses a permission, here...

zu?

Ich denke, dass die Übersetzung korrekt ist.
Den ersten Satzteil könnte man auch so formulieren: "Wenn er zu spät kommen sollte, ..."
Der Rest des Satzes ist aber ok.
"May" heißt "können, durfen". Und die Version mit "können" ist hier völlig üblich. ;)

zu spät ≠ late

Espi Espi October 25, 2011 October 25, 2011 at 12:44:36 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

In diesem Zusammenhang geht das nicht anders.
Ohne "zu" sagt es praktisch kein Mensch.

so what difference do you make between "late" and "too late"? surely it cannot mean the same thing....

Espi Espi October 25, 2011 October 25, 2011 at 12:53:46 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

That's German ;))

Espi Espi October 25, 2011 October 25, 2011 at 12:56:01 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

... The context is also important.

>That's German ;))

The lack of perception of the difference between "late" and "too late" probably explains Stalingrad...

You can be right there ... ;-D

"dürfen" halte ich in diesem satz für fehl am platz.
