:-)

marafon marafon October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 10:16:54 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

http://tatoeba.org/rus/sentences/show/1932955

Leg dich nicht mit mir an.

marafon marafon October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 10:30:55 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

@sharptoothed

sharptoothed sharptoothed October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 10:36:49 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

http://tatoeba.org/rus/sentences/show/1937303
;-)

marafon marafon October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 10:44:44 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Tom and Mary in the land of sentences".

sharptoothed sharptoothed October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 10:46:27 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

marafon marafon October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 10:54:48 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

В принципе, можно, наверное, придумать более-менее дословный перевод, типа "it can't make us unglad", но я не уверен, что это возможно :-)

marafon marafon October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:09:04 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

"wem würden die nicht gefallen?"

sharptoothed sharptoothed October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:09:36 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

2al_ex_an_der

marafon marafon October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:11:32 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Dear Eldad! Please invent for us some double negative!

al_ex_an_der al_ex_an_der October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:12:19 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Bitte keine "раздражениe" ! :)

Eldad Eldad October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:17:48 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Why should I invent for you a double negative? ;-)
What do you mean, Marina, in which context? :)

Eldad Eldad October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:19:28 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

(By the way, did you say:
"I reckon it's time to wake up Eldad"? ;-))

marafon marafon October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:21:23 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

@sharptoothed

sharptoothed sharptoothed October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:22:35 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Hurray! Eldad is awaken! :-)
Eldad, actually the stumbling block lies here:
http://tatoeba.org/rus/sentences/show/1937303
:-)

sharptoothed sharptoothed October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:24:57 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

2marafonL

Eldad Eldad October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:26:05 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Dima, I like that double negative! ;-)

al_ex_an_der al_ex_an_der October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:26:13 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Dear Eldad, just do something to make the Russian Soul feel comfortable! I have terribly offended my Russian friends by producing a translation which doesn't mirror the whole value and beauty of the Russian sentence. :(

Eldad Eldad October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:28:21 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

You mean, auf Deutsch? Aber wo?
Lass mich mal gucken...

Eldad Eldad October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:30:35 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

I like both German sentences there :)
I guess both of them convey quite well the idea of the Russian original.

sharptoothed sharptoothed October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:33:57 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

2Eldad
So do I ;-)

2al_ex_an_der
The only way to satisfy us is to produce a sentence with "It certainly makes us glad" sense but with double negation. :-)

al_ex_an_der al_ex_an_der October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:34:48 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Sharptoothed Wunderkind; look here:

"nichts" = "nothing" (the first negation)
"Unerfreuliches" = negation of "Erfreuliches" = "etwas erfreuliches" = "something giving you a reason to be glad" (the second negation)

All together now!

"nichts Unerfreuliches" = "nothing not giving you a reason to be glad"

marafon marafon October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:35:15 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

@al_ex_an_der

sharptoothed sharptoothed October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:42:18 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

> "nothing not giving you a reason to be glad"
great! but "nothing" is not a negation, actually :-) I think. :-)

al_ex_an_der al_ex_an_der October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:43:28 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

The only way to satisfy you is to write sentences in Russian and necessarily in a style apt to rival with those of Pushkin, Tolstoy and Dostoyevski. And that's exactly what I'm trying to achieve. But — I beg for mercy — that can't be done in a week or two. You really should give me a little more time!

sharptoothed sharptoothed October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:46:30 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

No problem, Alexander, but, so far, I think you have to make possible the impossible. :-)

al_ex_an_der al_ex_an_der October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:47:07 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

@marafon

(nichts Unerfreuliches)

Ich gratuliere dir. Du hast sehr gute deutsche Sätze geschrieben.

@Eldad
>(By the way, did you say:
"I reckon it's time to wake up Eldad"? ;-))

I really said it. Because we really need a natural-sounding English double negative here. And I am not able to invent it. I think Dima & Alexander have already given a full explanation to you, haven't they?
If not, you can read our dialogue and... thank you anyway :)

al_ex_an_der al_ex_an_der October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:52:24 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

>>"nothing" is not a negation<<

I don't think so. It is.

Just to encourage everyone :-)

We don't need no education.
We don't need no thought control.

Let's sing it, pals! :-)

marafon marafon October 19, 2012 October 19, 2012 at 11:57:03 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

@sharptoothed

sharptoothed sharptoothed October 20, 2012 October 20, 2012 at 12:00:38 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

OK :-) If "nothing" ~ "not a thing" than I have to agree :-)

Lyrical digression:
"My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun." - sounds nice, heh? :-)
